“You can’t tell me you know little about how Frank operates,” Luke said.

Enzo smiled. “He’s a master operator. He’s the person you need to study, so there are exceptions.”

“What is Frank all about, then?” Luke asked.

“Let me simplify this: he’s the unseen hand in how the city runs. Any major deal has to have his ear, because he’s got investments in many areas,” Enzo said.

“So he’s not just a businessman,” Luke said.

“He’s that, and a power broker as well,” Enzo replied.

“So how do you get to work with him?” Luke asked.

“In most cases, he’s the one who comes looking for you. People will tell him about any major goings on and then he makes his approach. A rule of thumb: don’t mess with him in those deals. He gets what he wants,” Enzo said.

“Even when he’s wrong?”

“He does his due diligence well before he invests in you. That’s why you don’t mess with him. If you do, he’ll come for you. He’s covered his bases, so he’s never wrong,” Enzo said. “That’s all I know. Let me go get your cheque.”

Enzo got to his feet and left. He returned moments later, cheque in hand, and gave it to Luke.

It was the full amount, including the additional period after they found Trent.

“Andy would give it himself, but he’s with Frank. I hope you understand. But he sends his gratitude for all the good work you’ve done,” Enzo said.

“Tell him I appreciate the work he sent my way,” Luke replied. “I wish you all the best with the campaign.”

“We’ll see you again, I’m sure,” Enzo said.

Luke drove off with a lighter heart, knowing they were fluid with cash again to do their work without worrying. He drove more casually, blasting some Afro neo-soul music that gave him that easy-like-Sunday-morning feel. He could also say part of the relief was coming from the end of the contract. Now, he wasn’t contractually bound to any politician, which gave him some sort of freedom. He didn’t consider his arrangement with Gazi as a contract.

He stopped over at the Grazier once again, perhaps to erase the terrible memory of his last experience there. The café wasn’t to blame. Besides, the waitress – her name was Ann, with a ponytail and wide smile – was quite courteous despite his embarrassment when Helen left. He liked that kind of humane customer service.

He found a cubicle all to himself this time, with a cushioned seat and a larger table. On the opposite cubicle seat, sat a woman wearing a sunhat. She seemed to be waiting for someone.

Luke set up his laptop for some reading, and Ann promptly served him with a mocha and some cookies and he went to work.

His curiosity about Frank had only increased since his conversation with Enzo. However, reading up on the man proved to be a tricky affair. He either kept a low profile, or paid hundreds of journalists to keep his name away from headlines. He found the former explanation more plausible as he scoured the internet for information.
